Inside Basis Vol. 14: We are Back!

October 6, 2025
Newsletter

Welcome back to Inside Basis, our (now) monthly newsletter for all things crypto accounting and tax! It’s been a while since we sent our latest newsletter but we’re finally ready to dive back into marketing and content. I love writing and being creative with Hash Basis, especially since accounting traditionally isn’t the most artistic field - and we’re here to change that! We hired a new digital marketing assistant as well (shout out to Alec!), so be on the lookout for more news from us. Let’s go!

What’s new in the Hash Basis universe?

Introducing Hash Basis 2.0 🌟

As we alluded to above, we’re shaking these up at Hash Basis! You can read our full manifesto here, but the main points are:

  • Our website got a makeover! We decided it was time for a refresh since we haven’t changed hashbasis.xyz since early 2022. We can’t believe Hash Basis has existed for almost three years - and we’re so grateful we made it this long!
  • Our “Services” page has been updated and our main service offerings can be broken down into:
    • Monthly Crypto & Fiat Accounting + Annual Tax Return
    • Crypto Subledger Implementation
    • “Special Projects
The main difference is we’re no longer providing individual crypto tax services and are working exclusively with businesses (that was our main vertical before but now it’s official). We’re already a niche accounting firm - crypto only - but we’re narrowing even further to C corps and S corps. Happy International Podcast Day! 🎤Who knew a holiday existed for this? September 30 is International Podcast Day, so we thought it was a perfect time to announce something very special: Hash Basis is launching a podcast! We know, everyone seems to have a podcast these days, but ours is even more niche than our crypto services. It’s called Mr. Martino’s Ledger and it’s a fun and educational chronicle of the history of accounting. Don’t worry, our utmost priority is to make sure it’s not boring. 🙅🏻‍♀️

The Latest on What’s Happening in the Crypto Industry

ETF for Dogecoin Launches in the US 🐕

Now that’s a headline I never thought I’d write in this newsletter. 😄 Called “Rex Shares-Osprey Dogecoin ETF” or DOJE, this instrument represents the first meme coin ETF in existence. Crypto has certainly come a long way since DOGE, a symbol of internet culture and Elon Musk, is now legitimized through the process of becoming an ETF. Other meme coins like BONK and Shiba Inu are on their way as well. Who needs utility when you can just speculate?

Kraken Acquires Breakout Trading Firm 👛

In early September, Kraken acquired Breakout, a proprietary trading firm that allows traders to hold leveraged positions on exchanges. Potential traders first have to go through a rigorous evaluation process to prove their prowess as traders. If they pass, they get access to a real funded trading account where they retain 90% of all profits earned.

Kraken has been on an acquisition spree this year, acquiring NinjaTrader and Capitalise.ai as well. Here’s how Perplexity summarizes these acquisitions:

Acquisition Date Description Strategic Purpose
NinjaTrader March 2025 US retail futures platform, CFTC-registered Expand multi-asset trading, dominance in futures
Breakout September 2025 Prop trading firm for skilled traders Capital allocation by skill, advanced trading
Capitalise.ai August 2025 No-code, natural-language trading automation Democratize strategy automation, lower barriers

Practical tips & tricks for all the crypto accountants out there

Gusto’s S Corp Hub: A Must for all S Corp Owners 🫡

Hash Basis switched to being an S corp (LLC) from an LLP at the beginning of 2025 for a variety of reasons such as:

  • lower FICA taxes (distributions are not subject to social security and medicare tax)
  • steady income through W-2 wages
  • retirement benefits like Solo 401(k) since we only have contractors (no employees besides owners)

Gusto recently hosted a great webinar on the topic (playback here), and they have an entire hub dedicated to S corps called “Gusto Solo.” They also have tools including:

  • a calculator that shows how much $$$ you could save in taxes by switching to an S corp
  • a reasonable compensation calculator (estimates how much a “reasonable” salary would be based on labor statistics)
  • integration with Guideline, a solo 401(k) provider

As an accountant, the last thing I’m thinking about is my own taxes and entity setup. However, the end of the year is rapidly approaching, so it’s time to get my ducks in a row. Here at Hash Basis, we love working with S corporations and helping with the books and 1120S returns, so reach out if you need assistance!

Thank you for reading! We appreciate your continued support as we grow and evolve our marketing team. Thanks for going on this journey with us. :)

Sincerely,

Mackenzie, Founder at Hash Basis 🧘🏻‍♀️
